Back to School!

It seems as if Back to School has been a bit delayed for some people because of Hurricane Irene.  For Towson, new student move in is taking place a day late (today) and the campus is buzzing!  Here is the view from my window-one of the main roads into Towson.

I love back to school time.  I don't know why- because for me now back to school means that traffic is about to pick up again adding at least 10 minutes or more on to my commute, the campus will be full of students making for long lines in the Union, and less available parking- but I love it none the less.  Today was kind of a nightmare with traffic lights still out from Irene and new student move in that was supposed to be yesterday now today.  It's been overly chaotic so I can't say I've enjoyed it THAT much...but it will get better-it was just a fluke.

For me, Back to School time is my New Year.  I guess because I work in education-I feel like fall is the time to start new things, get re-organized, and move forward.  It's also the time when I get to get out of the office more and visit high schools and attend college fairs-the part of my job I love the most.  The shopping for school supplies, back to school gear, the hustle and bustle of it all excites me too! While I don't want her to grow up too fast, I am looking forward to the day I can help Lilly pick out pencils, folders, a back pack.  I remember as a kid being so excited to shop for my supplies and to come home and organize it all.  I was especially a fan of binders and dividers!  The different color folders were also a favorite of mine.  I remember always choosing my favorite colors for my favorite subjects and my not so favorite colors for my not so favorite subjects (Math was ALWAYS a black or blue folder).

I also love Back to School time because it means my favorite season is right around the corner-Fall.  When I woke up this morning to go running it just smelled like back to school.  Weird I know-but the air had more of a crispness to it today which is a sign Fall is on its way!  What a nice change from the mugginess that is Summer in Maryland.

As I mentioned I love shopping for school supplies-well, I like shopping in general- and even though I wasn't officially shopping for back to school per say-I  did some 'back to school shopping' myself.  I always like to go into each new recruitment cycle with a new suit and few new work outfits but this season it was necessary because I still am not fitting into my old pre-pregnancy work clothes.  As much as I love to shop, I would so much rather be wearing my old stuff right now! So -er uh- unfortunately-it was back to school shopping for me and for Lilly too since she needed some Fall items.  I even got some supplies-a  planner to keep me organized and to manage my to-do lists and a large bag that will double as a purse/brief case/diaper bag.  Shopping for a bag, new planner, and clothes for Lilly was a breeze.  For my clothes on the other hand it wasn't so easy.   I did manage to find a few things that fit and didn't look too hideous so I am ready for my new start!

Tommy also is anticipating the school year because for him, it means business.  Tommy just recently launched Tommy Smith Percussion-his own business-  he specializes in drum lessons, instrument repair, and session recording and performing.  For him back to school means getting students for private lessons.  Check out his website! .  I am so proud of him!

So the Smith's are ready for the 'new year'!  We have a lot of fun things coming up like our 2 year anniversary, a wedding weekend away, plans to attend the Maryland Renaissance Festival, Tommy's birthday and more.  As you may have noticed I am pretty much back to the blogging world officially thanks to a much needed break to get re-organized and re-energized-see, new year!

To everyone out there with children going back to school or if you are going back to school yourself as a teacher or student-Happy Back to School!! For those of you who don't 'celebrate' back to school a least take a moment to breathe in the crisp morning air or take a moment to renew something in your life that has been forgotten-like a love for reading or love for running.  Go out and buy a new book or plan a small weekend trip to celebrate in your own little way.  Take time to enjoy this wonderful time of year and the small things in life-like Pumpkin picking or bubbles...

 Happy New Year!!
