Well only a few days (2 to be exact) from Lilly's 2nd birthday party. I am having about 50 people (adults and kids) in my townhouse to celebrate. I couldn't be more excited but with that excitement comes some stress about having enough food, is my house clean enough, do the favor boxes look perfect and oh howamIgoingtogetthisalldone!?
Now most of that stuff really doesn't matter because let's face it-most people won't notice too much if certain things don't get done BUT I will. Sooooo to lists I consult. I start planning a party at least a month out. Writing down ideas, things to do, etc. There are probably at least 20 revisions to those lists as I plan and prep of course. A lot of the prepping has to do with organizing the house and doing some small projects-like spackling some holes in our walls from picture frames and then hanging those said pictures frames somewhere. Ordering picture collages of Lilly's entire year, her yearly photo book, and making sure her outfit is ready are some easy things I take care of pretty far in advanced. Oh and of course choosing a theme! This year it's pink owls/spring. With Easter next weekend and the new owl trend thing going I had LOTS to work with! Including making macaroon Easter nests turned Owl nests!
As I get down to the wire (about 2 weeks out) I start creating shopping lists, finalizing menus, and actually going out and shopping for some items that don't need to wait til the last minute. As soon as I get items they get checked off the list and as I move through the week I created more lists and more lists...making sure I don't miss a thing.
This week not only did I create the 'last minute' shopping list but I also created the execution list. I write down each project that I can do ahead of time for each day counting down to the party and then create a plan of action for the day of-where do I need to be? what do we need to pick up? and what do we need to do-all listed next to the times I plan to have them done. This allows me to leave no stone unturned and most of all-prevents me from having a major fail-like forgetting to put the lasagnas in the oven!
I have prepped a lot ahead of time...the favors are done and displayed, lasagnas are made and frozen, and all of the shopping has been done. Tonight's objective is to start baking and to make sure all papers are put away and anything that normally gets tossed on the counter for later is filed/organized. Also maybe hoping to get an idea of where I want some of the decorations and maybe convincing the hubby to hang them for me.
My day of to dos will be decorating the cupcakes, cooking/baking/picking up food, cutting veggies and fruit, picking up balloons and flowers, filling coolers, and cleaning. Cleaning isn't too bad and I wait til the last minute because prepping can sometimes make it worse...or you know having a toddler. Waiting until the last minute to vacuum, wipe down counters etc will save me from having to do it again if it had been done ahead of time. I will most likely make sure the bathrooms are clean and dust the night before.
Whew-I have to say while it sounds like a lot, Tommy will be pitching in to help. Tommy's mom is also taking Lilly in the morning so we can get it all done toddler free-because you moms know how it is to get stuff done with a toddler to take care of-this will be a blessing! She will come back for nap time and wake up in time to party hard! I cannot wait!
