A Letter to 'Clarence'

As we come near the end of my pregnancy I have come to realize that I am going to miss this.  As much as I miss sleeping on my stomach and won't miss people with their "huge" and "twins" comments, I will really miss being pregnant.  It's such a special time and I am so grateful it's gone so smoothly.  Tommy and I have been really lucky and in a few short weeks/days we will be mom and dad.  WOW!

As I was showering the other day I got to thinking and began composing a 'Letter to Clarence'.  I always have done my best writing/public speaking preparation in the shower so why stop now!  I decided I should document it so that our little one will be able to read it when he/she is older...I am envisioning giving it to him/her on their wedding day or maybe college graduation...who knows but I thought I would share some of it here.  So here it goes:

Dear 'Clarence',

Soon your dad and I will get to meet you and I cannot begin to tell you how excited we are to see your tiny fingers and tiny toes, and see that full head of hair we saw pictured on the sonogram a few weeks ago.  You are going to grow up so fast-please don't!  Right now you are kicking and squirming in my belly and my how strong you are.  I like to think that you are just as excited about coming out and meeting us too!  You are going to be a ball of energy-sometimes you may get in trouble for it, just like your mom, but just know that one day it will be your best trait!

Your dad and I want you to know just how lucky you are.  You are coming into this world with so many people that love you and want the best for you.  Grammy Lainey and Gramps (Grumps!), Mimi and Pa, Aunty Em and Uncle Paul, Aunt Baba and Uncle Rob, Aunt Kristie and Uncle Frank and all of your cousins, Katie, Emily, Kelly (watch out, she will be 21 when you are 18 and she may buy you beer for senior week-it's ok to say no but if you don't just BE CAREFUL and remember you can always call us to come and rescue you, even though we may be mad-you will thank us later), Emily Ruth and Evan.  Not to mention your great-grandparents and mommy and daddy's aunts and uncles and cousins and friends who are all anxiously awaiting your arrival and have already showered you with love and gifts!

There are so many things your dad and I need to learn and I want to warn you that we will make mistakes along the way (although don't think for one second we are going to admit it!).  You will make mistakes too, but just know that it's part of life and they are apart of what makes us who we are. We just hope that you know how much we will love you everyday of your life no matter what.  There will be times when you think you hate us and that you know more than us-that happened to us too with our parents and just know that one day you will look back and realize how right we were ;).  Our greatest hope is that we can teach you well so that when you do grow up, you can make the best decisions and choices for you.

We are going to have so many good times together and that is what we are looking forward to the most.  Your dad and I laugh every day, even when things aren't always looking up.  If you don't have laughter in your life you have nothing.  Your dad and I are so lucky we found each other and that we have you as a reflection of our love.  You are everything we ever dreamed of and we love you so much and haven't even met you yet.  From the moment we saw your heart beating on that screen when you looked just like a little Gummy Bear...
we have loved you and will love you for the rest of our lives.  It sounds crazy that you can have so much love for someone and when you have children of your own you will know exactly what we mean.

So until you are born we will be enjoying the last moments of quiet in our little house- just me and your dad.  We are preparing for your arrival by setting up your room (we hope you love it), cleaning (although I am sure you won't notice this much), and making sure we have everything to make you comfortable.  While our lives are going to be forever changed the moment you arrive- we don't want to have it any other way.  We can't wait to meet you, our little Gummy Bear!

Love always,
Mom and Dad
